West Virginia’s five goals are the most since Sept. 22, 2006, in a 5-0 shutout against Syracuse. WVU has won 19 of its last 21 games at Dick Dlesk.
An aggressive West Virginia offense forced the action early and found the back of the net in the game’s 13th minute. Junior forward Deana Everrett placed a through ball up the middle to senior forward Ashley Banks for a one-on-one with XU goalkeeper Kelly Farrell. Banks fired the ball into the bottom corner of the net for the 1-0 lead, her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
WVU added to its lead in the 25th minute with a penalty kick goal from senior forward Kim Bonilla. Sophomore midfielder Carolyn Blank served a ball to Bonilla in the box where a Xavier player was called with a hand ball. Bonilla converted the PK, making WVU 2-for-2 this season in penalty kick tries.
West Virginia extended its lead to 3-0 just before halftime on a goal from senior forward Kiley Harris. Redshirt freshman Heather Saffel played a ball out wide to Banks who beat the last Xavier defender. Banks quickly found a wide-open Harris in the middle who was left to beat Farrell for her second goal of the season.
“I can’t stress enough how important it was for us to bounce back and get a win today,” said head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “It was a total team effort and I’m very proud of the way we played and how hard we played this afternoon.”
The Mountaineers picked up where they left off in the second half, scoring a goal less than five minutes after intermission. Bonilla crossed a ball into the middle where Farrell knocked it away but WVU’s Everrett was there to touch it home.
WVU would strike again in the 66th minute when freshman midfielder Ashtin Larkin served a beautiful ball to senior Natalie Cocchi for a header. Cocchi’s goal was the first of the season and 13th of her career.
The Musketeers (1-6) found the back of the net with under a minute remaining in the match. Midfielder Kaitlyn McGoldrick connected on a WVU mis-clear from 16 yards out to spoil the shutout.
Sophomore goalkeeper Mallory Beck made one save in 60 minutes to pick up her fourth win of the year. Freshman Kerri Butler saw her first action as a Mountaineer, playing the final 30 minutes of the win.
Twenty-four different players saw the field for West Virginia (4-2) today as the Mountaineers out-shot Xavier 21-8. Both teams took five corner kicks and Xavier committed 14 fouls to 11 for WVU.
Next up for the West Virginia is Pitt as both teams open up BIG EAST play on Friday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m.
