MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University men’s soccer team jumped from No. 20 to No. 13 in this week’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas poll released today.
WVU defeated then-No. 6 Maryland 1-0 in overtime on Sept. 7, and most recently downed Duquesne in the squad’s home opener on Monday, 1-0. The Mountaineers now hold a 3-1-0 record.
Senior Dan Stratford netted both game-winning goals and goalkeeper Zach Johnson has recorded three straight shutouts; just one shy of tying the WVU single-season record. Both Stratford and Johnson were honored by the BIG EAST for their efforts when Stratford was named to the weekly honor roll and Johnson was named rookie of the week.
The Mountaineers, who jumped from No. 21 to No. 15 in the weekly Soccer America poll released yesterday, are now in the Top 15 in both major weekly polls. WVU also has been ranked No. 9 by SoccerTimes.com and No. 15 by College Soccer News, both released on Sept. 10.
Next up, WVU will travel to Durham, N.C., to take on No. 5 Duke (3-1) on Saturday, Sept. 15. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
