Men's Soccer: WVU Open 2007 Season Against OSU

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Mountaineers will open the 2007 regular season on Aug. 31 against Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio, where they will participate in the Bert and Iris Wolstein Soccer Classic. Game time is set for 5 p.m. and will be televised live on the Big Ten Network.
The match marks the first live game telecast for the network. Direct TV will carry the game live on Channel 220 at 5:00pm on Friday night. Live game stats will also be available at www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com. WVU holds a program record of 25-15-4 in season opening games.
The Mountaineers hold a 9-5-3 series record against Ohio State, which started in 1963. WVU last played OSU in 2001 when the Mountaineers dropped a 1-0 contest played in Columbus.
OSU won the Woldstein Classic in 2006 and went on to record an 11-7-3 overall record. The Buckeyes opened the 2007 season with two exhibition matches tying No. 21 Creighton 2-2 on the road and winning an Aug. 24 match against No. 24 Rutgers 1-0 on their home field.
WVU defeated Marshall 3-0 in its first exhibition match on Aug. 22 with a pair of goals scored by seniors Andy Wright and a single added by Mike Anoia. The Mountaineers were up 1-0 in the first half against Kentucky on Aug. 25 after a goal by senior Dan Stratford. The game was called off early in the second half due to lighting in the area.
Next up, the Mountaineers will face head coach Marlon LeBlanc’s alma mater, Penn State, on Sept. 2 to close the Bert and Iris Wolstein Soccer Classic in Columbus, Ohio. Game time is set for noon.
WVU will host Duquesne on Sept. 10 in the team’s home opener at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
