Volleyball: Opens Season 1-1

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.– The West Virginia University volleyball team opened their season 1-1 after defeating tournament host Morehead State at the MSU Invitational on Friday evening.
The Mountaineers (1-1) took the match 3-2 (26-30, 33-31, 13-30, 30-28, 16-14).
The Eagles (0-1) came out strong in game one defeating the Mountaineers in a hard fought battle. However the Mountaineers showed their heart and determination in game two by jumping out to a 4-1 lead. WVU went on to overpower the Eagles throughout the rest of the match to put a win in the record books.
Senior outside hitter Abby Tevis and Sophomore Kristina Gallahan recorded 15 kills a piece, while senior setter Kailee Goold had 14 digs.
Earlier in the day the Mountaineers fell to Southern Illinois 1-3 (30-26, 28-30, 30-18, 30-26).
The Mountaineers held on tight throughout the match scoring a win in game two, and only recording one loss by more than four points. The Salukis(1-0) will now face Morehead State in a 11:30 a.m. match on Saturday.
Leading the Mountaineers in kills and blocks against the Salukis was junior middle blocker Tammy Wolf. True freshman libero Bonnie West made her debut recording a strong 15 digs.
West Virginia will continue play in the MSU invitational tomorrow at 2 p.m. against Towson.
