MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University men’s basketball players Darris Nichols and Alex Ruoff have accepted invitations to play for the Athletes in Action team representing the United States at the 2007 Jones Cup held in Taipei, Taiwan, beginning July 2.
Others accepting invitations are Michigan’s Zack Gibson, Miami’s Brian Asbury, Clemson’s Cliff Hammonds, Texas A&M’s Donald Sloan and Marshall’s Tyler Wilkerson.
The team will assemble in Xenia, Ohio, on June 24 for a five-day training camp before heading to Taipei on June 29. In addition to playing nine games in a span of nine days, the team will perform numerous outreach activities including basketball clinics and visits to a local orphanage.
Former St. John’s coach Mike Jarvis is once again coaching the team after leading the 2006 team to the gold medal. Serving as assistants are Minnesota-Moorhead assistant coach Jason Beschta and former Bryan College head coach Morris Michalski.
Nichols and Ruoff both led West Virginia to the 2007 NIT championship on the way to a 27-9 record. Nichols will be a senior this season while Ruoff will be a junior.
