COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The WVU baseball team split the season series with Maryland after losing to the Terps 6-3, Tuesday night at Shipley Field in College Park, Md.
The Mountaineers took game one of the home-and-home series in Morgantown 13-2, on April 24.
Trailing 6-3 in the top of the ninth, WVU threatened to tie the game as Chris Enourato and Adam White each singled to bring the tying run to the plate with one out. But Maryland closer Brad Taylor was able to get Tyler Kuhn to ground into the 6-4-3 double play to end the game.
Taylor picked up his second save of the year for the Terps.
The Mountaineers (25-19) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to solo home runs from Justin Jenkins and Jordon Yost in the first and second innings, respectively. Jenkins finished the night 3-for-4 while Yost ended up 2-for-4.
Maryland (26-27) battled back to get two runs in the third and took the lead in the fourth when shortstop Dan Melvin blasted a three-run shot off of WVU starter Levi Maxwell to take the lead 5-2.
The Terps added one more run in the fifth off of reliever Joe Stupka and didn’t let another run cross the plate defensively.
Mike Murphy led the Terp offense with a 2-for-2 night with two doubles and two walks. Maryland’s other multiple-hit batter was Mike Moss, who was 2-for-4.
Maxwell (4-5) gave up five runs in four innings to get credit for the loss before giving way to Stupka for the final four innings. Stupka allowed four hits and walked two.
Maryland’s Ian Schwalenberg (3-0) also went four innings, giving up a pair of runs on three hits. Schwalenberg earned the win and struck out four Mountaineer batters.
The Mountaineers host Ohio tomorrow night at Hawley Field at 7 p.m.
