MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University rifle team coach Jon Hammond today announced the signing of one recruit for the 2007-08 season.
Kyle Smith, a Dubois, Pa., native, brings years of Junior Olympic and USA National experience to the Mountaineer team. Smith traveled to this year’s Junior Olympics held in Colorado Springs, Colo. Smith finished fifth out of 90 shooters in the air rifle competition.
“I’m excited to be able to shoot with the other recruits this fall,” Smith says of coming to WVU.
The young talent’s choices came down to West Point and West Virginia. Hammond is looking forward to Smith becoming a Mountaineer.
“I’m really excited to get him signed,” said Hammond. “We looked at him last summer and we kept an eye on him all year. He’s a great student and a hard worker. He got accepted to West Point and I think that says a lot about him.
“I think he’ll be a really solid team member and should be able to contribute right away in his first year.”
Not only will Smith play a key role on the range in the fall, but he also rounds out an incredible West Virginia recruiting class.
“I think with him signing and the other three we probably have the top recruiting class in the country,” adds Hammond.
Smith will join Tommy Santelli, Brandi Eskew and Andy Lamson who all signed in November 2006.
