Whitlock had another strong performance for the Mountaineers to improve to 7-5 on the season. The right-handed pitcher matched his career high in strike outs and has now gone at least eight innings in his last five starts.
"He didn't give in and normally we wouldn't have let him throw that many pitches but we're down to the end of the season and he's got all summer to rest that arm," said West Virginia coach Greg Van Zant.
"For us to win this series I really think we have to save our bullpen. We've got to get a complete game or two and I didn't want to get deep into our bullpen in game one."
WVU plated its first run in the second when freshman Chris Enourato drew a bases loaded walk. After Justin Parks lined out to center field, Adam White knocked an RBI single back up the middle to put WVU up 2-0. Tyler Kuhn added the inning’s final run with an RBI single to right.
West Virginia got single runs in the third, seventh and eighth and plated two in the fourth. Senior Justin Jenkins smacked his 11th home run of the season over the right centerfield wall in the seventh.
The win puts West Virginia's record at 28-21, 9-15, but the Mountaineers remain in 10th place in the BIG EAST standings. Cincinnati blew a 4-1 lead to Louisville, losing 6-4 in 12 innings. The Bearcats drop to 9-15 in the league and tied with West Virginia in ninth place. UConn picked up a 5-0 road victory at Notre Dame to move into eighth place in the conference at 9-13.
Georgetown falls to 20-33, 7-18.
White had three hits, while Austin Markel was 2 for 4 with two RBI for the Mountaineers. Kuhn finished with two hits and two RBI as well.
Hoya starter Erick Chandler takes the loss to fall to 1-2. Chandler went 3 2/3 innings, allowing six runs, four earned, while surrendering six hits. The Hoyas lone run came on Mark McLaughlin’s sacrifice fly to left field that brought in Matt Iannetta.
West Virginia and Georgetown meet again for game two tomorrow on Dollar Night at Hawley Field. The game has been moved up two hours from its originally scheduled time of 7 pm and will now get underway at 5 pm.
"There are a chance of showers and if we wait until 7 o'clock and it rains we're going to be bummed out that we didn't start it earlier," Van Zant said. "Hopefully everyone will figure out that we're starting at 5 and we'll have a good crowd."
