Baseball: West Virginia Falls to South Florida

TAMPA, Fla. – The West Virginia University baseball team fell 8-5 to South Florida this evening at Red McEwen Field in game one of a three-game conference series.
USF (24-9, 7-3) got on the board in the first inning with an RBI single from outfielder Josh LeRoy.
WVU (17-9, 3-4) got two in the third to tie it up 2-2. Shortstop Tyler Kuhn hit a two-RBI single to score Vince Belnome and Adam White. The Bulls added three runs in the bottom half of the inning and two more in the fourth to take a 7-3 lead.
Designated hitter Trent Ridgley knocked out a sacrifice fly in the sixth to send Austin Markel across the plate and cut South Florida’s lead to 7-4. Markel had earlier advanced on a single to left field.
The Mountaineers and Bulls each scored one additional run before the game was over.
Right-handed pitcher Danny Otera (5-4) was credited with the win. Otera allowed five runs on 10 hits while striking out eight in nine innings on the mound.
West Virginia starter Matt Yurish took the loss, falling to 1-2 on the season. Yurish struck out four while allowing eight runs on 10 hits in 6.2 innings of work.
First baseman Jordon Yost was 3-for-4 on the day while Ridgley had a team-high two RBI. Left fielder Justin Jenkins extended his team-best hitting streak to 25 games with a double to centerfield in the third inning.
The Mountaineers and the Bulls will meet again on Friday, April 6, at 6 p.m. for day two of BIG EAST action.
