DALLAS, Texas – WVU’s Justin Jenkins is one of 50 college baseball players to be named to the Dick Howser Trophy watch list by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Jenkins has been rewriting the West Virginia record books since he arrived on campus in 2005. The left fielder boasts the 10th longest hitting streak in NCAA baseball history (38 games). He also is the WVU record holder for most career doubles (69), most career total bases (411), most consecutive multi-hit games (8) and most base hits in a season (94 in 2006).
This season, Jenkins leads the BIG EAST with an impressive .428 batting average and also with 21 doubles. The left fielder is only seven doubles away from breaking the school record for most doubles in a single season.
The Ridgeley, W.Va. native was named preseason second team All-America by Collegiate Baseball in 2007. He has also received other honors including preseason all-BIG EAST in 2007, first team all-BIG EAST in 2006 and ABCA all-East Region in 2006.
BIG EAST players joining Jenkins on the list are Louisville’s Logan Johnson and USF’s Walter Diaz. Johnson has been batting .417 on the season with 45 RBI and 18 doubles for the Cardinals. Diaz leads the Bulls with a .382 average, 49 runs and 28 RBI. The shortstop boasted a 24-game hitting streak that came to a close earlier this week.
The Dick Howser Trophy is awarded to the top player in collegiate baseball and is often considered the sport’s most prestigious award.
