MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – On a beautiful day made for an outdoor track meet, West Virginia University’s track and field team won 10 events at the Mountaineer/Mohigan Invitational on Saturday, April 21, at the WVU Track and Field Stadium.
“We had a very nice day of competition on arguably the best outdoor track day this season,” coach Jeff Huntoon says. “We had some great performances and met most of the goals we set for ourselves.”
The Mountaineers finished the day with 10 first place finishes, 14 BIG EAST qualifiers, five ECAC qualifiers and one NCAA Regional qualifier.
Sophomore Karly Hamric got the day started strong for WVU, taking first in the 1500 meter run with a conference qualifying time of 4:34.95.
“I’m ecstatic for Karly’s finish,” Huntoon says. “She has just moved up so much this season and made great strides in her improvement.”
Senior Jessica Czaikowski had a stellar day in her last home meet as a Mountaineer. The Tottenham, Ontario, native took first in the 100 meter hurdles with a BIG EAST, ECAC and NCAA Regional qualifying time of 13.57. Czaikowski also placed first in the 200 meter dash with a conference qualifying time of 24.08.
Nancy Regalbuto also enjoyed her last home meet, taking first in the high jump with an ECAC qualifying leap of 1.70 meters.
“I’m very happy for Nancy because this qualifier extends her season with us and I know she was hoping for that,” Huntoon says.
Senior Halimah Bashir nabbed a BIG EAST and ECAC qualifier in the 400 meter hurdles, finishing first with a time of 1:03.72.
“This was only Halimah’s second time running the event, so I couldn’t be any more proud of her,” says Huntoon.
Sophomore Rachel Goodman earned her first career BIG EAST qualifier, finishing fifth in the javelin with a throw of 35.59 meters.
Today’s Invitational was also the last home meet for seniors Alexis Noel, Michelle McGinnis, Nicole Dorinzi and Maria Stover-Bartlett.
The Mountaineers will now travel to Philadelphia, Pa., for the Penn Relays on April 26-28. The Relays will be the last meet before the BIG EAST Outdoor Championship on May 5-6.
