BOX SCORE
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Notre Dame used three big innings to roll over West Virginia 17-6, at Frank Eck Stadium Saturday afternoon.
After the Irish scored six runs in the second to go up 6-0, WVU countered with a three-run third inning highlighted by Trent Ridgley’s two-RBI double to left center. Ridgley would score on the ensuing at bat as Vince Belnome singled back up the middle to cut the lead to 6-3.
But the Irish weren’t done on offense and continued to pound WVU starter Matt Yurish as they scored five more runs in the third to take a commanding 11-3 lead. WVU picked up a run in the sixth but Notre Dame tacked on five more runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Yurish lasted just two innings and surrendered eight hits and eight earned runs. Yurish’s record falls to 2-3.
With the win, the Irish move to 21-17 and 6-7 in the BIG EAST. West Virginia (22-13) falls to 5-8 in the league and has lost three of its last four BIG EAST games.
Ridgley led the Mountaineers from the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Belnome and Tyler Kuhn also added a pair of hits for West Virginia.
Senior Justin Jenkins extended his school record hitting streak to 34 games with an RBI single in the sixth inning.
WVU and Notre Dame play the final game of the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. in South Bend.
