Baseball: WVU Travels For BIG EAST Road Series

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team will journey to South Bend, Ind., for a key three game conference road series against Notre Dame April 20-22, at Frank Eck Stadium.
Game one will take place at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 20. First pitch for game two will be thrown at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 21. The BIG EAST series will conclude with a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday, April 22.
The Mountaineers (22-11, 5-6) take to the road after defeating the Ohio Bobcats 6-1 on Wednesday, April 18, in Athens, Ohio. Right-handed starter Josh Whitlock surrendered only one run during his eight inning stay on the mound. First baseman Jordon Yost knocked out a two-run homer, good for his eighth home run of the season.
Left fielder Justin Jenkins is batting .429 on the season and currently owns the longest hitting streak in WVU history (32 games). Southpaw Matt Yurish (2-2) is sporting a 3.04 ERA after 47.1 innings on the mound. In his last outing, the Martinsburg, W.Va., native struck out 12 batters while picking up a 16-4 win over Cincinnati on April 13. The Mountaineers currently lead the BIG EAST conference with a .336 overall team batting average.
Notre Dame (19-17, 4-7) has picked up close victories against Toledo and Purdue this week to notch its 18th and 19th wins of the season, respectively. The Fighting Irish came back from a 7-5 deficit in the bottom of the eighth inning to pick up an 8-7 win over the Rockets on Tuesday, April 17. Notre Dame then rallied in the 10th inning to take a 1-0 victory over Purdue the next night.
Shortstop Brett Lilley leads the Irish as he is batting .366 on the season and has a team-high 49 hits. Right-handed pitcher David Phelps (5-3) boasts a 1.34 ERA after 60.2 innings of work. The sophomore has also struck out a team best 54 batters.
West Virginia and Notre Dame first met in 1902. The Irish lead the all-time series 30-13.
