MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team will travel to Athens, Ohio, to take on the Ohio Bobcats at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 18, at Bob Wren Stadium.
West Virginia (21-11, 5-6) enters the midweek contest after splitting a two game conference series with Cincinnati. The Mountaineers notched their fifth BIG EAST win by a score of 16-4 on Friday, April 13, at Hawley Field. The story of the night was Trent Ridgley as the designated hitter went 5-for-6, hitting two home runs and tying the school record for hits in a single game. Ridgley would step onto the mound for two innings in relief. The Bearcats tried to take control of game two, but WVU worked to keep it close. The Mountaineers were able to get the tying run on base in the bottom of the ninth, but a routine pop out ended the game.
Senior Justin Jenkins is batting .434 on the season and currently owns the longest hitting streak in WVU history (31 games). Junior lefty Matt Yurish (2-2) is boasting a 3.04 ERA after 47.1 innings on the mound. The Martinsburg, W.Va., native struck out a career-high 12 Bearcat batters on Friday, April 13. For his efforts against Cincinnati, Ridgley was named to the BIG EAST’s weekly honor roll.
Ohio (12-20) was swept in three games by Eastern Michigan, April 13-14. The Bobcats were shut out in games one and two, but were able to score four runs in game three. First baseman Marc Krauss is batting .374 on the season with 11 doubles and six home runs to lead Ohio. Right-handed pitcher Kevin Mementowski (2-1) is sporting a 2.67 ERA after 33.2 innings of work. The Bobcats will face off against Cincinnati at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 17, before hosting the Mountaineers.
West Virginia has a 40-35 advantage in the all-time series against Ohio, which began in 1911.
