MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University women’s basketball coach Mike Carey today announced the signing of two players for the upcoming 2007-08 school year. Giving the coach signatures are Sarah Miles and Ashley Murphy.
Miles, a 5-7 point guard from Sam Houston High in San Antonio, Texas, averaged 15 points, four assists and six rebounds for the 30-5, 13-0 Hurricane, which advanced to the second round of AAAA playoffs this past season. As a senior, Miles was named the SAISD tournament MVP, all-District MVP and TABC all-region. She was named to the Northside Lone Star all-tournament team and the San Antonio Express-News “Super Team.”
She is also a four-time first team all-district and SAISD all-tournament team performer. She is rated among the top 250 high school players in the country according to All-Star Girl’s Report (ASGR).
“They just made me feel at home,” Miles said of her future Mountaineer coaches. “It’s a big opportunity for me and being able to represent my school and the San Antonio community is great.”
“Sarah is an extremely talented combo guard that has the capability to play several positions on the perimeter for us,” Carey said. “She has great quickness and has excellent scoring capabilities.”
Murphy, a 5-11 small forward and native of Mobile, Ala., comes to WVU after spending two seasons at Okaloosa-Walton Junior College in Niceville, Fla. She is rated the No. 3 small forward and eighth-best overall junior college player by ASGR.
A first-team all-Panhandle conference performer in 2007 as a sophomore, Murphy helped the Lady Raiders to an 18-10 record. She averaged 10.5 points and 7.8 rebounds per game as a freshman in 2006. She also garnered all-Panhandle second team honors in 2006.
In high school, Murphy was a McDonald’s All-America nominee at Mattie High School in Prichard, Ala.
Murphy is the third player from Okaloosa-Walton who will play for the Mountaineers under Carey. Current Mountaineer Lateefah Joye and Murphy were teammates in 2005-06. Former Mountaineer Ramika McGee (2003-06) played at Okaloosa-Walton from 2001-03.
“I chose WVU because when I visited I liked the environment, the team and the coaches. I hope to make a big impact. I’m so excited.”
“Ashley is very athletic and will give us additional scoring from the post,” Carey said. “She plays bigger than her size.
“Overall, I’m very pleased with our entire recruiting class, including Liz Repella and Marie Malone, who signed in the fall. I’m very pleased that all are good students, good people and excellent basketball players. I’m very excited to get these high quality student-athletes.”
