KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Bad weather got the best of the Sea Ray Relays and over half of the events were scratched on Saturday, April 14. This is the first time in the Relay’s 41 year history that the meet has not been finished.
Despite the storm, the Mountaineers were able to produce two quality showings in two different relays. Seniors Halimah Bashir and Jessica Czaikowski, sophomore Brittany Hohn and freshman April Rotilio took 10th in the 4x100 relay (46.93), while senior Abbie Stechschulte, sophomore Raeleen Hunter and freshmen Keri Bland and Marie Louise Asselin combined for a sixth place finish in the distance medley relay (11:24.76).
WVU also competed at the Bennie Benson Memorial Invitational, hosted by Robert Morris University, on Saturday. The Mountaineers finished with 11 top 10 performances.
Sophomore Nicole Destefano led the squad, taking fourth in the 100 meter dash (13.49) and second in the 200 meter dash (27.41).
Freshman Ayana Young captured eighth in the 1500 meter run (5:21.44), while junior Roshawana Mongold took second in the 400 meter hurdles (1:09.52).
In the field events, sophomore Erica Reib finished fourth (1.50 meters) in the high jump, and junior Maggie Smith and sophomore Alexis Reed finished first (3.20 meters) and second (3.20 meters) in the pole vault, respectively.
WVU also turned in strong performances in the throwing events. In the shot put, sophomore Lashawna Black took third (11.56 meters), while senior Michelle McGinnes finished fifth in the hammer throw (39.65 meters).
Sophomores Rachel Goodman and Lauren Kosmal were the final competitors for the Mountaineers, finishing seventh (33.60 meters) and eighth (32.64), respectively, in the javelin throw.
WVU will next host the Mountaineer/Mohegan Invitational on Saturday, April 21, at the WVU Track and Field Stadium.
