MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University’s tennis team secured its fourth BIG EAST victory, blanking Villanova, 7-0, on Sunday, April 1, at the Ridgeview Racquet and Fitness Club.
“This is the type of match we needed,” says coach Marc Walters. “Everybody put it together today, and those who had been struggling turned a corner and finished their matches with an exclamation point. Top to bottom, I was happy with the whole team’s performance.”
The Mountaineers (10-9, 4-1) got on the board first, winning the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches to take the team point.
From there, the points kept piling up for WVU. Juniors Natalia Prinz and Stacey Percival easily won their matches, defeating Candice Carlin (6-3, 6-2) in the No. 1 singles match and Jaclyn Williamson (6-0, 6-4) in the No. 2 match, respectively.
“After losing a tough doubles match, both Natalia and Stacey were able to bounce back and play one of their best singles matches this season,” Walters says. “Natalia played with a bounce and showed the type of steady play we need from her.”
In the No. 3 match, junior Monica Lyskawa came from behind to defeat Leighann Reilly, 3-6, 6-2 (10-7).
“Monica played smart, and true to form, found a way to win,” Walters says.
The rest of the Mountaineers made sure to take care of business, securing the shutout. Senior Kelly Walsh defeated Carla Erskine in the No. 4 match, 6-1, 6-1, and freshman Alexandra Kaluza was victorious in the No. 5 spot, defeating Colleen Walter, 6-4, 6-1. Fellow freshman Stephanie LaFortune earned the final point for WVU, beating Lyndsey Lostritto in the No. 6 match, 6-3, 7-5.
WVU plays host again when Duquesne visits on Wednesday, April 4. First serve is set for 3 p.m. at the WVU Tennis Courts.
