MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – West Virginia University’s women’s swimming and diving squad set two school records and one BIG EAST record during the second day of competition at the NCAA Championship, Friday, Mar. 9, at the University of Minnesota.
The squad got the day started by taking 17th in the 200 medley relay, breaking both the school and BIG EAST records it set three weeks ago with a time of 1:40.47. Freshmen Morgan Callaway, Kitti Veisz, Stephanie Shupe and Kayla Andrews comprised for the time, which missed qualifying for finals by .07 seconds.
“This was a very impressive time for us,” says coach Sergio Lopez. “Even though we were edged out of the finals, we are competing very well and setting a good tone for the future.”
Shupe also swam the 100 fly, setting a school record with her 33rd place finish of 54.71.
Junior Maritza Paredes placed 46th in the 200 free with a time of 1:49.10, while Veisz took 28th in the 100 breast, clocking in at 1:02.80.
Callaway, having set a school record in the 100 back yesterday during the 400 medley relay race (55.07), was supposed to compete in the 100 back today before disqualifying herself with a false start.
“I know it was hard for Morgan not to swim today, but I am very proud of all that she has accomplished this year,” Lopez says.
The Mountaineers will swim in the 800 free relay this evening. The finals session is set to start at 7 p.m. (cst).
