MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 23 West Virginia University gymnastics team will participate in a quad meet at No. 11 Arkansas with New Hampshire and Pitt on Friday, March 9, at 7 p.m., at Barnhill Arena in Fayetteville, Ark.
West Virginia (16-7, 8-1 EAGL) improved its regional qualifying score (RQS) from 194.070 to 194.320 with last weekend’s performance at Ohio State. WVU has two events ranked in the top 25 as vault (48.880 RQS) ranks 18th and floor is 14th (48.950 RQS).
No. 22 NC State surpassed the Mountaineers with a 194.345 RQS to move into first, marking the first time all season that WVU doesn’t rank atop the EAGL standings. WVU currently ranks fourth in the Southeast Region.
West Virginia posted some of its better event scores of the season last week at No. 18 Ohio State, including 48.925 points on the uneven bars, a season high. Sophomore Mehgan Morris took the individual bars title with a 9.9 while junior Kara Weaver had a career day, scoring career highs on both bars (9.7) and beam (9.725). Junior Jaime Gold also set a new career high on bars with a 9.675 and junior Katie McGregor posted a season high 9.7 on bars.
Arkansas boasts a 195.625 RQS thus far in 2007 but has only outscored West Virginia once in the three all-time meetings.
The Mountaineers defeated Pitt earlier this season 193.150-190725 on Jan. 19, and have dominated the all-time series with the Panthers 41-12-2. Pitt has an RQS of 192.760.
EAGL rival New Hampshire brings a 192.555 RQS into the meet and knocked off WVU 193.925-193.075 in Durham, N.H., on Feb. 10. WVU still leads the series with Wildcats, 18-7.
