Gymnastics: #21 WVU Places Second at #18 OSU

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 21 WVU gymnastics team placed second with 194.325 points in a quad meet at No. 18 Ohio State on Sunday, March 4, at St. John Arena in Columbus, Ohio.
Host Ohio State took first with 195.825 points while Kentucky (194.150) placed third and George Washington (189.550) was fourth.
West Virginia (16-7, 8-1 EAGL) opened the afternoon on the floor exercise and scored its best road result of the year in that event with 49 points. Senior Tynisha Dennis and junior Jaime Gold scored 9.85s and senior Janáe Cox garnered a team high 9.875 to put WVU in second behind Ohio State’s 49.175.
On WVU’s best event, vault, the Mountaineers posted a 48.775 to retain second place after two rotations. The score was just under the team’s season average of 48.868. Again it was Cox, Dennis and Gold with the highest team scores as all three scored 9.8s or higher.
West Virginia saved its best effort for the bars, where the team compiled a season-high composite score of 48.925 to gain ground on the Buckeyes and trim the lead to 146.750-146.700. Mehgan Morris took the individual title for the second week in a row with a 9.9.
The Mountaineers couldn’t overcome the Buckeyes on beam, however, scoring just 47.625 points. Freshman Shelly Purkat had a team-high 9.75 while junior Kara Weaver scored a 9.725.
West Virginia returns to action Friday, March 9, in a quad meet at Arkansas with Pitt and New Hampshire in Fayetteville, Ark.
