BOX SCORE
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The WVU baseball team fell 16-5 to Louisville this afternoon at Patterson Stadium in game two of this weekend’s BIG EAST action.
After Boomer Whiting and Logan Johnson committed a double steal in the first inning, Jorge Castillo grounded out to the shortstop with Whiting scoring on the play. The run gave the Cardinals (18-8, 4-1) any early 1-0 advantage.
West Virginia’s troubles continued as Louisville managed four runs in the bottom of the second inning.
The Mountaineers (15-7, 3-2) got their first hit as sophomore Adam White doubled to left center to lead off the fourth inning. Senior Justin Jenkins would single down the left line to score White and get WVU on the board.
Despite a three-run fifth for West Virginia that included a two-RBI single from Tyler Kuhn, the Mountaineers could not close the gap.
Junior Jorge Castillo hit a grand slam to contribute four runs to the Cardinals six-run seventh inning and give his team a solid 16-5 lead.
Mountaineer starter Levi Maxwell (4-1) took the loss, his first of the season. The right-handed pitcher allowed nine runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings of work.
Lefty Justin Marks (2-1) was credited with the win as he allowed four runs on five hits while striking out six and walking one.
White went 2-for-5 while Jenkins was 2-for-4. With his single in the fourth inning, Jenkins extended his hitting streak to a team-best 21 games.
The BIG EAST series between the Mountaineers and Cardinals will close with a meeting on Sunday, April 1. First pitch for that contest is slated for 1 p.m.
