Baseball: WVU Drops Game One to Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The WVU baseball team fell 4-3 to Louisville this evening at Patterson Stadium in the Mountaineers’ first BIG EAST road series of the season.
West Virginia (15-6, 3-1) lit up the scoreboard first, scoring two runs in the top half of the fifth inning. Senior Justin Jenkins singled to shortstop Chris Cates to score Jason Pape who had reached on a single of his own. Next to bat, sophomore Austin Markel double to left field to send Jenkins home and put some distance between the Mountaineers and the Cardinals.
Louisville (17-8, 3-1) evened up the score in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of runs off a single to centerfield from Pete Rodriguez. The Cardinals then took a 3-2 advantage as Boomer Whiting doubled to left center to score Derrick Alfonso. Whiting attempted to advance on the throw, but was put out at third to end the inning.
Senior Trent Ridgley knocked out an RBI double in the top of the eighth inning to tie it up. Ridgley’s hit scored sophomore Justin Parks who reached on an error by Cardinal first baseman Daniel Burton.
It was Whiting who would give Louisville what would be the game-winning run as he singled up the middle to send Isaiah Howes home. Howes singled to second to lead off the inning for the Cardinals.
Mountaineer starter Matt Yurish took the loss, falling to 1-1 on the season. The left-handed pitcher allowed four runs and walked two in seven innings of work.
The win went to Cardinal reliever Trystan Magnuson who tallied is first win of the season (1-0). Magnuson allowed one run on two hits in 2.0 innings on the mound.
Jenkins registered the only hit for WVU in the top of the first inning as he doubled down the right line. With that hit, the left fielder knocked out his 59th career double in a Mountaineer uniform to become the all-time doubles leader for West Virginia. Jenkins passed former West Virginia power Stan Posluszny who had 58 career doubles to his name.
The Mountaineers’ second game against the Cardinals, originally scheduled for 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 31, has been moved up. West Virginia and Louisville will now meet at 2 p.m. on Saturday for day two of this weekend’s BIG EAST action.
