CLEVELAND – The West Virginia University wrestling team ranks in first place with 47 points after the first round of the Eastern Wrestling League tournament at Cleveland State’s Woodling Gym on Saturday, March 3. The Mountaineers rank ahead of host CSU by one point and three points ahead of third-place Edinboro.
West Virginia’s success during the first day of the EWL’s was fueled by a stellar showing in Session I. Eight Mountaineers advanced to the semifinals of their respective weight classes, with only 125-pounder Scott Stuart and 165-pounder Eric Connolly suffering losses.
The biggest upset of the entire tournament so far was pulled off by 133-pounder Mark Anderson as he won a 5-3 decision over No. 2-seeded Ricky Deubel. Anderson had lost to the Edinboro wrestler 8-4 during the regular season on Feb. 15. Saturday was different though as the Lemoore, Calif., native used a pair of takedowns and over a minute of riding time to earn the win, while allowing no offensive points for Deubel.
Brandon Rader supplied his seventh pin of the season when he put Clarion’s Greg Lewis on his back in 1:49. The fall was the second fastest of the season for the Parkersburg, W.Va., native.
The 141-pounder was not the only WVU grappler to record bonus points in their opening bout as David Jauregui, Kurt Brenner and Chance Litton all recorded major decisions.
Session II begins at 6 p.m. this evening with the semifinals and the consolation brackets up to through the semifinals. Live results can be followed on intermatwrestle.com.
