COLLEGE PARK, Md. – West Virginia University senior gymnast Janáe Cox was named the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Gymnast of the Year and was also selected as the Outstanding Senior Gymnast at the annual EAGL Championship Banquet on Thursday evening.
Cox was also named all-EAGL first team in each event and now has received seventeen first team all-EAGL honors in her career, including four times in the all-around and beam. She was previously named the EAGL gymnast of the week four times this season to bring her career total to eleven.
The Otisco, Ind., native finished the regular season ranked first in the all-around within the EAGL with a regional qualifying score (RQS) of 39.225.
Cox, who is WVU’s all-time leading scorer, tied for the EAGL all-around title with North Carolina’s Courtney Bumpers and won the balance beam title in 2005. In 2004, she was the EAGL vault champion and awarded Rookie of the Year.
This marks the fourth time a West Virginia gymnast was named the EAGL Gymnast of the Year and the fifth time that a Mountaineer gymnast has won Outstanding Senior of the Year.
Maryland junior Gretchen Kittelberger earned the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and Terrapin freshman Brandi George was named the Rookie of the Year.
Junior Jaime Gold was selected as a first team all-EAGL vaulter for the second consecutive year. Gold holds the conference’s top vault RQS at 9.87 coming into Friday’s meet.
Sophomore Mehgan Morris was selected to the all-EAGL first team on bars for the second year in a row. Morris, a former EAGL Rookie of the Year in 2006, enters this weekend with a 9.88 RQS to lead the league. Morris posted 10 scores of 9.8 or better on bars, including four 9.9s this season.
Senior Tynisha Dennis was selected to the all-EAGL first team on floor for the second time in her career. Dennis ranks second in the conference with a 9.85 RQS on floor and shows a season high of 9.925.
