GULFPORT, Miss. – After three days of tough competition, West Virginia University’s tennis team finally pulled out a victory, defeating Long Island, 7-0, in the last match of the Golden Eagle Classic, on Sunday, Mar. 25, at the Bayou Bluff Tennis and Recreational Club.
“We looked very good today,” says coach Marc Walters. “The team really built its stamina all weekend for this game. After a good weekend of tennis, our physical strength finally got us the win.”
The Mountaineers (9-8, 3-1) secured their first shutout victory since blanking Youngstown State on Feb. 9. Most important, junior Natalia Prinz snapped her 11 match losing streak, earning her first team point since the YSU match in a 6-2, 6-4 win over H’Ann Johnson in the No. 1 singles match.
“Natalia really got better with each match this weekend,” Walters says. “You could tell on Friday that she was ready to play, and today, she really stepped her game up for the win.”
Prinz’s victory gave WVU a 3-0 edge over LIU. The Mountaineers first got on the board with the doubles point, taking both the No. 2 and No. 3 matches. Freshman Alexandra Kaluza then took out Xenia Roman in the No. 5 singles match, 6-0, 6-1.
Junior Monica Lyskawa secured the win for WVU, defeating Merve Koksal in the No. 3 match, 6-3, 6-2.
WVU now travels to California for a match against San Diego, the first ever in school history. Doubles play is set for 1:30 p.m. (pst).
