GULFPORT, Miss. – West Virginia University’s tennis team put up a valiant fight against Troy before finally falling, 6-1, to the Trojans on the second day of Southern Mississippi’s Golden Eagle Classic on Saturday, Mar. 24, at the Bayou Bluff Tennis and Recreational Club.
“I was very happy with the team’s competitive play today,” said head coach Marc Walters. “Troy is a very good squad, and we came out and played hard in the first sets. We learned a lot about our own game today and we know we need to step it up for the last match tomorrow.”
WVU’s lone point game from freshman Alexandra Kaluza, who defeated Fabian Gouveia in the No. 6 singles match, 6-3, 7-6. The win increases the Beaver, Pa., native’s season record to 6-3.
While the Mountaineers (8-8, 3-1) failed to capitalize on any other momentum swings, senior Kelly Walsh did put up a fight in the No. 4 singles match. The Chalfont St. Giles, U.K., native took the first set against Carolina Jouanin, 6-1, before losing the second two, 1-6, 0-6.
The Mountaineers will face Long Island on Sunday, Mar. 25, in the last day of the Classic. Doubles play is set to begin at 10 a.m.
