Tennis: Mountaineers Drop First Match at Classic

GULFPORT, Miss. – West Virginia University’s tennis team was no match for Southern Mississippi, losing convincingly to the Golden Eagles, 4-1, on Friday, Mar. 23, at USM’s Golden Eagle Classic at the Bayou Bluff Tennis and Recreational Club.
The Mountaineers (8-7, 3-1) faltered early, dropping the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches and relinquishing the team point to the Golden Eagles (13-2).
The singles matches did not go any better for WVU, as freshman Stephanie LaFortune fell to Lauren Gutterman in the No. 5 singles match, 6-1, 6-3.
Fellow freshman Alexandra Kaluza produced the Mountaineers’ only match point, defeating Grace Kammerer, 7-5, 6-1, in the No. 6 match. The Beaver, Pa., native is now 5-2 in singles play this season.
USM sealed its victory with wins over juniors Stacey Percival and Natalia Prinz. Percival fell to Brittany Serret in the No. 2 match, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6), and Prinz was defeated by Sherry Price in the No. 1 match, 6-2, 7-5.
The Mountaineers will face Troy tomorrow in the Classic’s second day. First serve is set for 10 a.m. (cst).
