MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team travels to Philadelphia, Pa., to open its 2007 season at the Murphy Cup on Saturday, March 24, on the Schuylkill River.
The Murphy Cup is annually hosted by Temple and attracts some of the nation’s top collegiate teams. This is the Cup’s 25th consecutive season.
“After a long winter we are all very excited to kick off our spring season Saturday,” says head WVU rowing coach Nancy LaRocque.
Last Sunday the Mountaineers competed against their first opponent of the season when they hosted Buffalo in a scrimmage. This weekend will be different though, as no races of official length were run against the Bulls.
WVU is slated to compete in the varsity eight and novice eight races. Last year the novice boat highlighted West Virginia’s trip to the regatta by taking second in the finals.
Racing begins in the early morning and lasts all day. Results can be found on row2k.com as well as regattacentral.com.
“We are looking forward to heading out to San Diego on Monday for our training camp which finishes up with the San Diego Crew Classic,” says LaRocque.
After racing in the Murphy Cup the Mountaineers leave for a spring break training trip in San Diego, Calif., that concludes on April 1 with the San Diego Crew Classic.
