MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 21 West Virginia University gymnastics team will host a quad meet with Rutgers, Temple and Yale on Senior Day Saturday, March 17, at 1 p.m., at the WVU Coliseum.
West Virginia (18-8, 10-1 EAGL) continued to bump up its regional qualifying score (RQS) to 194.550 with a key road performance of 194.300 points at No. 11 Arkansas last week. With the new total, WVU reclaimed the top spot in the EAGL standings, surpassing N.C. State (194.350 RQS).
Saturday’s meet is the last home competition of the regular season for five WVU senior gymnasts: Amie Bouchier (Midlothian, Va.), Aimee Brown (Mobile, Ala.), Janáe Cox (Otisco, Ind.), Tynisha Dennis (Bowie, Md.) and Cheryl Goldenfield (Columbia, S.C.). This senior class has posted 77 wins for head coach Linda Burdette entering Saturday’s meet, including two 20-win seasons the past three years. The Mountaineers are just two wins away from another 20-win season in 2007.
“This senior class really bonded and made the commitment to each other over their four years to have some accomplishments,” Burdette says. “They have come together well and have also been great in teaching the other athletes in the gym what we expect at West Virginia University gymnastics.”
Cox ranks fifth in the Southeast region in the all-around (39.085 RQS) and is on pace to become WVU’s first 2,000 point scorer ever. The Otisco, Ind., native has scored 1,864.85 career points in 49 career meets.
Cox and Dennis (9.845) are tied for 10th in the floor exercise in the region. Bouchier has a 9.700 RQS on the balance beam to rank 22nd in the region, while Goldenfield has scored 9.7s or better three different times on the beam this season.
WVU has two events ranked in the top 20 as vault (48.945 RQS) ranks 19th and floor is 16th (48.965 RQS). The Mountaineers have also excelled on the uneven bars the last two meets posting season high scores of 48.925 and 49.075, respectively.
West Virginia is 222-44-2 (.831) all-time at home and is 5-2 in the Coliseum this season.
