MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – West Virginia University’s men’s swimming and diving team picked up right where it left off at the BIG EAST Championship, taking seventh in the 200 free relay at the NCAA Championship on Thursday, Mar. 14, at the University of Minnesota.
The team, comprised of freshmen Zoltan Povazsai and Ivan Tolic, sophomore Andrew Langenfeld and junior Nick Delic, clocked in at 1:18.78, a school and BIG EAST record. For their top eight finish, each swimmer was awarded All-America honors.
WVU also earned points in the 400 medley relay, when the same squad finished 16th with a time of 3:12.62. Because the team finished in the top 16, each swimmer was named an Honorable Mention All-America.
Earlier in the day, junior Pablo Marmolejo finished 42nd in the 200 IM with a time of 1:50.63. Freshman Sean Mahoney followed, finishing 44th with a time of 1:56.08.
Langenfeld was to swim the 50 free, but disqualified during the preliminary round with a false start.
The Mountaineers finished the first day in 11th place with 24 points. Florida leads the field with 80 points.
WVU will return to the pool tomorrow, competing in the 200 medley relay, 800 free relay, 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast and 100 back.
