MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following a successful indoor season that saw the squad place eighth at the BIG EAST Championship, 11th at the ECAC Championship and earn points at the NCAA championship, WVU’s track and field team is set to start its outdoor track season at the UNC-Charlotte Invitational on Mar. 16-17, in Charlotte, N.C.
The Mountaineers return several key student-athletes this season.
Senior Nancy Regalbuto returns after taking a redshirt last season to compete in the high jump. The Hedgesville, W.Va., native, a three-time all-BIG EAST selection, last took second in the high jump at the indoor BIG EAST Championship in 2006.
Junior Alison Spiker returns to the outdoor squad after taking a redshirt last spring. The Ripley, W.Va., native is coming off a successful indoor season that saw her place 12th in the 1 mile run at the ECAC Championship.
Two-time BIG EAST indoor pentathlon champion Abbie Stechschulte makes her return to the outdoor squad after sitting out last season with a redshirt. The Columbus Grove, Ohio, native is coming off an excellent showing at the indoor NCAA Championship, where she took sixth in the pentathlon (4,085 points) and earned All-America honors.
Additionally, freshmen distance runners Marie Louise Asselin and Keri Bland join the team after redshirting the indoor season. Both recently represented their countries at the NACAC Cross Country Championship. Asselin (Team Canada) took second with the best collegiate time (14:08), while Bland (Team USA) finished fourth (14:24).
WVU will have a week off following the invitational before it travels to the George Mason Open on Mar. 31.
