PROVIDENCE, R.I. – West Virginia University’s tennis team fell in a competitive match to Brown, losing 5-2, on Sunday, Mar. 11, in Providence, R.I.
“We played very well today, but you have to give Brown credit because they played us well in areas of the line-up where they had been struggling,” coach Marc Walters says. “Despite the loss, this was a good experience for us to travel and play an Ivy League school.”
The Mountaineers (7-6, 2-1) lost the doubles point despite a valiant performance from senior Kelly Walsh and junior Monica Lyskawa in the No. 2 match. The pair was able to battle back from a 0-3 deficit and beat Kelley Kirkpatrick and Emily Ellis, 8-6.
Walsh and Lyskawa also enjoyed success in singles play, earning the only team points for WVU. Walsh defeated Brett Finkelstein (7-6 (4), 6-0) in the No. 4 match, while Lyskawa came from behind to beat Sara Mansur in the No. 3 match (3-6, 6-2, 6-4).
“Both girls showed great intensity out on the court today and really just put forth outstanding efforts,” says Walters.
The squad returns home for two key BIG EAST matches against Pitt on Friday, Mar. 16, and Seton Hall on Sunday, Mar. 18. First serve against the Panthers is tentatively scheduled for 3 p.m., while action against the Pirates should begin at 1 p.m. Weather permitting, both matches will take place at the WVU outdoor courts.
