MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The WVU baseball team won both games of a doubleheader this afternoon versus Hartford at Hawley Field. West Virginia took game one 11-5 and triumphed 11-1 in game two action.
The Mountaineers (8-3) heated up early with a home run from junior Tyler Kuhn in the bottom of the first. The play resulted in two runs as sophomore Adam White scored after having reached on a walk from Hartford starting pitcher Adam Flaherty.
Redshirt freshman Jordon Yost would tack on another home run in the bottom of the third to give West Virginia a 5-0 lead. A single from Justin Parks to the right side to score Mike Schmidt and a sacrifice fly from Jason Pape to send Vince Belnome across home plate would round out the inning for the Mountaineers.
Hartford (0-3) added four runs in the top of the seventh to try to close the gap.
Belnome and Parks both went 2-2 while WVU starter junior Matt Yurish recorded his first win of the season. Yurish (1-0) struck out eight batters and allowed only one hit on two runs in 6.0 innings of work.
Flaherty dropped to (0-1) on the season as he allowed five runs on four hits in 2.1 innings on the mound.
"It's great to get off to such a great start at home," said WVU coach Greg Van Zant. "Our starting pitchers were great for us in both games today and went deep into the game."
Game two started much like the first with West Virginia lighting up the scoreboard with four runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Kuhn went 3-5, batting in two runs while Jenkins crossed the plate a game-high three times.
Junior starter Kenny Durst improved to 2-1 on the season, striking out six batters while allowing only a single run on seven hits in 8.0 innings of work.
Hawk starting pitcher Chris Browne recorded the loss and fell to 0-1 as he allowed six runs on seven hits in 1.2 innings on the mound.
West Virginia and Hartford will face off again on Monday, March 12, at Hawley Field. The contest will serve as the make-up game for game two of Saturday's doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for Noon.
