MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Freshman Kayla Andrews took 19th in the 100 free to lead West Virginia University’s women’s swimming and diving team on the last day of competition at the NCAA Championship on Saturday, Mar. 10, at the University of Minnesota.
Andrews, a Newark, Del., native, clocked in at 49.40, .12 seconds shy from making the consolation round. Even still, heading into tonight’s finale, Andrews currently holds the fastest time amongst all freshmen swimmers.
“Kayla’s title as the fastest freshman is an amazing feat for her and for Mountaineer swimming,” says coach Sergio Lopez.
Freshman Morgan Callaway got the day started for the Mountaineers, setting a school record in the 200 back, taking 37th with a time of 1:59.51.
“Morgan is not swimming like a rookie anymore,” Lopez says.
Kitti Veisz, a freshman from Budapest, Hungary, took 35th in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:20.15, while the 400 free relay team clocked in at 24th with a time of 3:24.77. Andrews, Callaway, Veisz and junior Maritza Paredes comprised for the time.
Additionally, the 800 free relay swam at yesterday’s second session, taking 22nd with a time of 7:22.74, the second fastest time in school history. Paredes, Andrews, Callaway and Veisz combined for the finish.
All told, the women broke four school records and one BIG EAST record at this week’s championship. The squad finished the season breaking a total of 40 school records.
“This season was just unbelievable for the girls,” Lopez says. “The future is very bright for Mountaineer swimming.”
The men’s squad will have its chance at the NCAA Championship next week, Mar. 15-17. The meet will also be held at the University of Minnesota.
