Baseball: WVU Takes Game One Against Hartford

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The WVU baseball team blanked Hartford this afternoon in game one of a doubleheader at Hawley Field. The Mountaineers won their home opener 7-0.
West Virginia (6-3) stepped out to an early lead in the bottom of the second thanks to a home run from redshirt freshman Jordon Yost. The Mountaineers tacked on two runs in the bottom of the third to stretch the lead to 3-0. Senior Jason Pape smacked a double to right center in the bottom of the fourth to score sophomore Justin Parks who had also reached on a double.
Hartford (0-1), competing in its first game of the season could not stage a comeback. Three more runs in the bottom of the fifth would complete the win for the Mountaineers.
Mountaineer starter Levi Maxwell (3-0) was credited with the win. Maxwell struck out six batters and had no walks in seven innings of work.
The Hawks’ Weston Szymanski (0-1) recorded the loss, allowing four runs on five hits in 3.2 innings on the mound.
Yost went 2-2 this afternoon while senior Justin Jenkins was 1-2.
Game two of this afternoon’s doubleheader has been delayed due to rain. First pitch for that game is tentatively scheduled for 5 p.m. today.
