MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University’s men’s swimming and diving team jumps from 19th to 17th on the latest College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) poll. The ranking is the highest ever for the program.
The team was ranked 20th for most of the season before moving to 19th in January. With the dual-meet season finished, the squad will most likely end the regular season ranked 17th.
Today’s move up the polls follows the Mountaineers (13-0, 5-0) impressive victory over 19th-ranked Notre Dame, UConn, Oakland and Penn State at the Shamrock Invitational in South Bend, Ind., on Jan. 27.
The team has made waves this season. Besides this being the first time in school history that the Mountaineers have been nationally ranked, this is also the first time since 1980 that a club has remained unbeaten throughout the dual-meet season. Also, there are currently 12 WVU men nationally ranked in their individual events.
The women’s team (9-4, 3-2) ends the season just outside of the top 25, receiving 10 votes, good enough for 31st.
The Mountaineers are wrapping up their two week training session prior to the BIG EAST Championship. The meet’s first session begins Wednesday, Feb. 14, in Uniondale, N.Y., and wraps-up on Saturday, Feb. 17.
