UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – West Virginia University’s track and field team had a successful first day at the Syklles-Babcok Cup on Friday, Feb. 9, at Penn State’s Horace Ashenfelter Track. Four Mountaineers achieved BIG EAST standards.
“We had a pretty good first day,” says sixth year coach Jeff Huntoon. “Everyone’s just tuning up as we head towards the BIG EAST Championship.”
Fifth year senior Jessica Czaikowski turned in another stellar performance in the 55 meter hurdles, securing a BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying time of 7.64 in the preliminaries.
Freshman Kristen Loughry also had a big night, setting a personal best in the pole vault with a leap of 3.60 meters. The Hurricane, W.Va., native’s finish qualifies her for both championships. Loughry also qualified in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.29.
Fellow freshman April Rotilio was once again impressive in the 60 meter dash, clocking in with a BIG EAST time of 7.83 in the first round.
Junior Abbie Stechschulte was the final Mountaineer to qualify for BIG EAST, running to an 8.10 finish in the 55 meter hurdle preliminaries.
WVU will compete at the Cup again tomorrow, Feb. 10. The meet is expected to wrap-up around 4 p.m.
