MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University’s tennis team swept every match and defeated Youngstown State, 7-0, at the Ridgeview Racquet and Fitness Club on Friday, Feb. 9.
“This was a perfect match for us to play in,” says first year coach Marc Walters. “Youngstown State was feisty and scrappy and we had to work hard for our points.”
The Mountaineers (3-2) started the night strong, winning each of the doubles matches. Securing the point for the team were juniors Natalia Prinz and Stacey Percival, who defeated Emily Thayer and Michelle Fuleky at the No. 1 spot, 8-2.
The duo got the job done in singles as well. Prinz defeated Gina Peretti in the No. 1 match, 6-4, 7-5, while Percival blew past Thayer at No. 2, 6-4, 6-1.
Senior Kelly Walsh is credited with the longest match of the evening, going head-to-head with Tanisha Welch for over two hours before finally winning the No. 4 singles match, 7-5, 5-7, 10-6.
At No. 3 singles, junior Monica Lyskawa knocked off Fuleky, 6-1, 6-0, while senior Ashley Constantine won the No. 5 match, beating Irena Lanc, 6-4, 6-2.
Finally, freshman Gabriela Blaskovicova secured her first singles victory of the season, defeating No. 6 seed Kelly Culberston, 6-0, 6-2.
The Mountaineers will return to the court on Sunday when they play host to Marshall at 1 p.m. at the Club.
