MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University wrestler Jared Villers was named the Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) athlete of the week for his performance in last Friday’s win versus Pitt.
With his team trailing 16-10 with two bouts remaining the Akron, Ohio, native scored a technical fall against Mike Heist to close the gap to 16-15 and set up teammate Dustin Rogers to upset the 25th-ranked Panthers. The win was the first for WVU over a ranked opponent on the road for the first time since 2002.
Villers leads the Mountaineers in wins with 19 so far this year (19-5). He has also scored many valuable bonus points for West Virginia as 11 of his 19 wins have come by either pin or technical fall.
The 197-pounder is currently ranked 15th by W.I.N. Magazine and 3-0 in EWL dual meets. Villers is the first Mountaineer to earn an EWL weekly honor this year.
