MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rifle team suffered its first home loss of the season today as it fell by only 14 points (4568-4582) to Mississippi.
The Mountaineers (5-4, 2-4) emerged with a four-point advantage (2266-2262) after the smallbore competition. The Rebels, however, posted a 2320-2302 lead in air rifle to come out on top.
“It’s disappointing to lose,” said WVU coach Jon Hammond. “We’re still performing well, though, and we just have to do as well as we can next week at qualifiers.”
WVU’s Brian Launer posted the team’s top scores in smallbore (580) and air rifle (584). Launer’s smallbore score was a season-high for the senior and was also the top total of the day. Mississippi’s Shannon Wilson posted the highest air rifle sum of the match as she shot 586 points.
West Virginia has posted a 4-1 home record this season. This is the first time since 2003 that the Mountaineers have registered a one-loss home record. That year, the team went 6-1 at home, 11-2 overall.
WVU will next travel to Lexington, Va., to face off against the Virginia Military Institute. The match up with the Keydets will also serve as NCAA Qualifiers for the Mountaineers.
