CINCINNATI, OHIO – For the second consecutive match, West Virginia University’s tennis team took a club to the wire and pulled through with a win, this time defeating conference foe Cincinnati, 4-3, on Saturday, Feb. 24, at the Queens City Racquet Club.
Today’s win not only marked the squad’s second BIG EAST victory, but was also first year coach Marc Walter’s 400th career victory.
“The girls entered a tough environment and took Cincinnati’s best shots,” says Walters. “There were battles everywhere, but we played with confidence and left with the win.”
The Mountaineers (6-4, 2-0) got on the board first, sweeping the hotly contested doubles matches for the team point. Juniors Natalia Prinz and Stacey Percival sealed the point for WVU, beating Hannah Hinton and Jenny Rowan in the No. 1 match, 9-7.
Junior Monica Lyskawa and freshman Stephanie LaFortune quickly disposed of their competition, winning their singles matches in straight sets. Lyskawa defeated Valeriya Dandik, 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 3 match, while LaFortune sailed past Alizee Paradis in the No. 5 match, 6-1, 6-3.
The Bearcats (6-3, 1-1) battled back, winning the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 matches. Freshman Alexandra Kaluza sealed the victory for WVU, taking the No. 6 match in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, over Elizabeth Young.
“Kaluza came up big for us today,” Walters says. “I was impressed with her aggressive play, especially in the third set.”
The Mountaineers now have a week off before they travel to Tampa, Fla., and meet No. 31 South Florida on Saturday, Mar. 3. The match will be played at 11 a.m. at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
