Gymnastics: #20 West Virginia Sets New Season High

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 20 WVU gymnastics team earned a new season-high score en route to defeating Michigan State 194.875-194.275 on Friday, Feb. 23, before a crowd of 1,417 at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown.
“I’m really proud of how our girls performed tonight,” Coach Linda Burdette said. “They handled all the pressure so well that built up as the meet came down to the very end.”
Senior Janáe Cox placed in the top three of every event and put up her highest total of the season in the all-around at 39.375 to win that title.
The Mountaineers started the night on their strongest event, vault, and lived up to its billing by compiling a team score of 48.775. Cox tied a season-high with a 9.85 while freshman Ashley Wilson displayed the best vault of her career with a 9.6.
WVU posted its best score of the year on bars with a 48.600 to bring the team total 97.375. Sophomore Mehgan Morris took first in bars with a 9.9, tying the best bar performance by any Mountaineer this season. Erica Watson landed second with a season-high 9.85 and Cox tied for third with a 9.75.
The Mountaineers continued to keep momentum by scoring a 48.575 on beam, their second-best score of the year. Cox’s 9.85 landed second place in the event.
Heading into the final apparatus, WVU held a 145.950-145.475 lead over the Spartans. West Virginia’s floor lineup would seal the win by scoring 48.925 points. Tynisha Dennis, Morris and Cox all scored 9.825s or better to give the Mountaineers a clean sweep of the event in the individual standings and finish the night on a high note.
West Virginia moves to 14-6 on the year while Michigan State drops its record to 10-5.
West Virginia returns to action in Columbus, Ohio, on Sunday, March 4, in a quad meet at No. 18 Ohio State with George Washington and Kentucky.
