MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rifle team will travel to Oxford, Miss., to compete in the Great American Rifle Conference championship on Feb. 24-25.
“I think we really need to enjoy our last match of the season,” said WVU coach Jon Hammond. “It’s the last match for the seniors so I’m sure they just want to go and do well.”
WVU last competed against the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Va., on Feb. 10. The Mountaineers out shot VMI 4566-4370. The win was West Virginia’s third 100-plus point victory this season. Lafe Kunkel shot the team’s best smallbore and air rifle scores (577 points and 576 points, respectively). Adam Somers, competing for the first time this season as a counter, registered 571 points.
The Mountaineers finished the regular season with a 6-4 record, the first winning record since the 2002 season. WVU also went 4-1 at home.
