Baseball: WVU Readies for Three Games in Four Days

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University baseball team is set to head south to participate in the Baseball at the Beach Tournament hosted by Coastal Carolina, Feb. 23-25. There, the Mountaineers will face N.C. State and UNC Wilmington.
WVU will also stop in Norfolk, Va., to take on Norfolk State on Monday, Feb. 26, before retuning to Morgantown.
The Mountaineers will take on the Wolfpack at 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 23, and will face off against the Seahawks at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 25. First pitch against the Spartans on Monday, Feb. 26, is set for 2 p.m.
N.C. State is a perfect 5-0 after two weekends of play. The Pack opened up with a three-game sweep of William & Mary Feb. 9-11 before feeding off that momentum to blank Gardner-Webb 8-0 on Saturday, Feb. 17. N.C. State then went on to record a 10-3 win over the Bulldogs on Sunday, Feb. 18. The Mountaineers are 2-7-1 all-time against the Wolfpack.
After dropping its first four games, UNC Wilmington (3-4) went on to sweep the series with Temple Feb. 16-18. Two of the Seahawks losses came against ranked teams. UNC- Wilmington fell 5-10 to #30 Oklahoma on Saturday, Feb. 10. The Seahawks were then defeated 8-9 in 11 innings against #4 South Carolina. WVU trails 3-6 all-time against UNC Wilmington.
Norfolk State (4-4) will enter Monday’s competition after a three-game series with Sacred Heart. Earlier, the Spartans earned a convincing 11-2 win over Villanova to avoid a Wildcat series sweep. West Virginia is a perfect 3-0 in the lifetime series against Norfolk State.
The Mountaineers (2-1) enter this weekend’s competition after a 2-1 series win over Cleveland State Feb. 16-18, in Winston-Salem, N.C. West Virginia delivered a 5-1 win in game one, with redshirt freshman Billy Gross stepping in to record the win. The right-hander recorded three strikeouts and only one hit in 2.1 innings on the mound.
WVU earned a 6-3 win in game two with junior right-hander Levi Maxwell recording the win. Pre-season all-BIG EAST selections Adam White and Justin Jenkins had big days for the Mountaineers as White went 4-5 and Jenkins went 4-4 en route to four RBI. Left-hander Eric Saffell entered in the top of sixth to record the save. The Vikings registered two runs on Sunday in the top of the eighth and one run in the top of the ninth to take the final game of the series 3-0.
