Women's Basketball: WVU Travels to Pitt

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s basketball team will be looking to hand Pitt just their second home loss of the season Tuesday evening when the Mountaineers take on the Panthers at 7 p.m. at the Petersen Events Center.
West Virginia (17-9, 8-5) is coming off an impressive 73-64 win over South Florida on Saturday night at the WVU Coliseum. The win moved West Virginia into a four-way tie for fourth place in the Big East Conference standings with Louisville, Pitt and South Florida.
The Mountaineer’s balanced attack is led by center Olayinka Sanni’s 13.9 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. The Chicago Heights, Ill. native is coming off a 22-point eight rebound performance against South Florida. LaQuita Owens, West Virginia’s best three-point threat, chips in 12.9 points per contest. Chakhia Cole rounds out the Mountaineers in double-figures, averaging 11.7 points per contest. The junior forward has started 91 consecutive games and leads the team with 88 assists.
Pitt (20-6, 8-5) has won five of its last six games but is coming off an 82-68 loss at Connecticut on Saturday. The Panthers are led offensively by Shavonte Zellous. The sophomore guard is averaging 19.8 points per game. Junior center Mercedes Walker adds 15.2 points per contest while sophomore guard Xenia Stewart pitches in 12.7.
West Virginia’s stingy defense has held opponents to just over 56 points per game this season and just over 36 percent shooting. The Mountaineers are 12-2 on the year when holding opponents under 60 points.
West Virginia holds a 19-15 advantage in the all-time series with Pitt. The Mountaineers are 2-1 at the Petersen Events Center and have won two straight in the facility. The Panthers are an impressive 9-1 at home this season.
