PALMYRA, Pa. – After several weeks of competition hosted by the Palmyra Sportsmen’s Association, the final results have been released placing the West Virginia University rifle team sixth out of 42 total teams in both the smallbore and air rifle competitions.
The Mountaineers competed at the Palmyra Invitational, Jan. 13-15, in Palmyra, Pa. There, the team recorded a season-high 4571 point aggregate as well as season-highs in smallbore (2265) and air rifle (2306). WVU’s air rifle score was only one point shy of the school record set by last year’s team.
Alaska Fairbanks took both disciplines at Palmyra with a 2313 point smallbore score and a 2369 air rife sum.
Individually, West Virginia measured up very well against the competition. Brian Launer placed 23rd overall in smallbore with a score 573 points while Lafe Kunkel came in 28th with a 572-point sum.
WVU had an exceptional air rifle performance as well. Out of 266 total individuals, all seven Mountaineers placed in the top 100. Paul Miller, Kunkel, Launer and Adam Somers placed in the top 50 (28th, 32nd, 33rd and 49th place, respectively).
West Virginia recently completed its regular season with an overall record of 6-4, the team’s first winning record since 2002.
The Mountaineers will next travel to the Great American Rifle Conference Championships Feb. 24-25, in Oxford, Miss.
