MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Locked in a battle that lasted well over five hours, West Virginia University’s tennis team finally fell to 60th ranked Marshall, 6-1, on Sunday, Feb. 11, at the Ridgeview Racquet and Fitness Club.
“The score doesn’t reflect how hard we fought as a team,” says first year coach Marc Walters. “We were right there during our singles matches. Marshall definitely felt the pressure and were forced to step-up its intensity.”
For the second Sunday in a row, junior Monica Lyskawa secured the only team point for the Mountaineers (3-3), defeating Thaddea Lock in the No. 3 match, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.
Junior Stacey Percival hung-in a tough match with No. 2 draw Karolina Soor before losing in three sets, 3-6, 7-6(1), 4-6.
Freshman Stephanie LaFortune took Yulia Kashelkina to three sets as well, but eventually lost the No. 4 match, 2-6, 6-4, 4-6.
At No. 1 singles, junior Natalia Prinz lost to 18th ranked Kellie Schmitt, 0-6, 2-6. Senior Kelly Walsh dropped the No. 5 match to Jeanne Schwartz, 0-6, 4-6, and senior Ashley Constantine fell to Jessica Keene in the No. 6 match, 6-7 (5), 3-6.
The Thundering Herd was able to earn the doubles point by sweeping all three matches.
WVU will next travel to University Park, Pa., to take on Penn State on Saturday, Feb. 17. The match between the clubs is set for noon.
