Track: WVU Sets 15 Personal Bests at Cup

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – West Virginia University’s track and field team continued its streak of improvement on the second day of the Syklles-Babcock Cup at the Horace Ashenfelter Track on Saturday, Feb. 10.
With one week to go before the BIG EAST Championship in Akron, Ohio, 15 Mountaineers were able to set new personal bests.
“The team is definitely peaking at the right time,” says sixth year coach Jeff Huntoon. “These results look great heading into the Championship.”
Sophomore Clara Grandt’s performance in the 3000 meter run was the highlight for the Mountaineers on Saturday. The West Union, W.Va., native’s fourth place finish (9:46.05) qualifies her for both the BIG EAST and ECAC Championships.
Also having a stellar second day at the Cup was WVU’s 4x400 relay team. Freshman April Rotilio, junior Abbie Stechschulte, and seniors Halimah Bashir and Jessica Czaikowski comprised for a seventh place finish (3:46.47), a season best and the sixth best time in school history.
Four other Mountaineers posted BIG EAST qualifying times on Saturday. Bashir placed 25th in the 400 meter run (57.43), Rotilio placed 12th in the 200 meter dash (24.72), junior Alison Spiker finished 20th in the 800 meter run (2:17.74) and senior Alexis Noel took 13th in the triple jump (11.33 meters).
WVU will take the next week to wrap-up training before the BIG EAST Championship on Feb. 17-18. The meet, held at the Akron Athletics Field House in Akron, Ohio, will be all day, both days.
