Gymnastics: WVU To Host 5 Team Meet Saturday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 25 West Virginia University gymnastics team will host a meet with George Washington, No. 18 Kent State, No. 23 Penn State and Wilson College on Saturday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m., at the WVU Coliseum.
West Virginia (6-2, 4-0 EAGL) currently owns an average score of 193.608 to rank No. 25 in the GymInfo national rankings. WVU has three events also ranked in the top 25 as vault (48.876 avg.) ranks 14th, beam is 19th (48.342 avg.) and floor is 25th (48.283 avg.). The Mountaineers currently lead the EAGL standings and have the highest average in three out of the four events.
Last week, Janáe Cox won the all-around (39.225) in a quad meet at No. 20 Kentucky to earn her third consecutive all-around victory of the season. She tied for first place on the uneven bars (9.825) and the balance beam (9.825), while placing second on floor (9.8). Cox was named EAGL gymnast of the week for her efforts, marking the second time this season she has won the award. Cox’s season all-around average is 39.150, which is tied for 20th in the country.
George Washington (3-3) enters Saturday’s meet ranked 47th in the nation with a 190.025 composite average. Last time out, the Colonials took third in a quad meet at Texas Women’s University on Jan. 27, with a score of 190.050.
Kent State (3-0) brings an undefeated record and a 193.925 average into this weekend’s meet. The Golden Flashes have posted scores of 193.100, 194.575 and 194.100 in their three wins this season over Western Michigan, Ball State and Southeast Missouri.
Penn State’s average score of 193.731 over its first four meets has the Nittany Lions ranking No. 23 in the country. Penn State (5-3) leads West Virginia, 25-4, in a series that began in 1979. The last meeting between the two schools was a 194.400-190.675 Nittany Lion victory on Jan. 21, 2006, in State College, Pa.
WVU leads the all-time series with George Washington, 27-1, and with Kent State, 19-9. The Mountaineers have never faced Wilson College in 34 years of competition.
