MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University wrestling team continues Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) action on Friday, Feb. 2, when it travels to Pittsburgh, Pa., to face Pitt at Fitzgerald Field House at 7 p.m.
The Mountaineers (2-3, 1-1 EWL) have had a week off to prepare for their dual with the Panthers (6-4, 1-1 EWL) after their last dual on Jan. 21. However, WVU should expect a much improved Pitt team from a year ago as it ranks 25th in the latest NWCA poll and 20th in the Amateur Wrestling News poll.
As usual, West Virginia should be led by the middle and upper weights of its line-up as Brandon Rader (141), David Jauregui (149), Zac Fryling (157), Kurt Brenner (174) and Jared Villers (197) have posted a combined record of 64-14. Rader leads the quartet in winning percentage with a .933 (14-1) mark, while Villers leads the squad in wins with 18 (18-5).
For Pitt, 133-pounder Drew Headlee leads the team in with a 19-7 mark. The team also has four other wrestlers with at least 17 wins: 157-pounder Matt Kocher (18-4), 165-pounder Sean Richmond (18-10), 174-pounder Keith Gavin (17-3) and heavyweight Zach Schaeffer (23-8)
Last season the Mountaineers took care of the Panthers, 20-13, in Morgantown. WVU has won five consecutive duals against their arch rivals from Pittsburgh, dating back to 2002.
